Kenyah Gawai Dayak

Gawai Dayak is a festival celebrated by the Dayak people of Sarawak, Malaysia, and parts of Kalimantan in Indonesia. It is held annually on June 1st to mark the end of the harvesting season and to celebrate the spirit of unity, culture, and thanksgiving.

Meaning: "Gawai" means festival or celebration in the Iban language, and "Dayak" refers to the indigenous peoples of Borneo.

Activities: The festival includes traditional music, dances like the ngajat, ritual offerings, wearing traditional attire, and the sharing of food and drinks—especially tuak (rice wine).

Significance: It honors ancestors, gives thanks for a bountiful harvest, and asks for blessings in the coming year.

Unity: Gawai Dayak also promotes unity among various Dayak ethnic groups, such as the Iban, Bidayuh, and Orang Ulu.
